Hearing loss is generally classified into three main types:
Conductive Hearing Loss – This type of hearing loss occurs due to issues in the outer or middle ear. It can result from fluid in the middle ear, excess earwax (cerumen), structural problems in the auditory canal or pinna, and more.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss – This type of hearing loss arises from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve. It can result from damage to hair cells in the cochlea, various diseases, complications during pregnancy and/or birth, genetic factors, and more.
Mixed Hearing Loss – This type of hearing loss involves a combination of issues in both the middle/outer ear and the inner ear.
Hearing loss can occur in one ear (unilateral) or both ears (bilateral) and may vary in severity between the ears.
